Under the noisy road, watched by the rats, they exchanged briefcases.

Rearranging clauses is often taught with complex sentences, where either the dependent or independent clause can come first:

The game may be cancelled, depending on the weather.

Depending on the weather, the game may be cancelled.

In the first sentence, the possibility of cancelling the game is emphasised. The second sentence emphasises the weather’s role in the decision .

With shorter sentences, there may not be a simple option for reordering the words to add emphasis, but it may still be possible by making slight alterations elsewhere. For example, changing to the passive voice can help to place the object at the beginning of a sentence:

He knew one thing about girls. (active)
